Fear and anger can be likened to quicksand. The harder we struggle with these emotions the quicker we lose ourselves in them. However, when we are calm enough to meditate and ponder, we might see them merely as surface emotions trying to obscure an uncomfortable truth about ourselves.

This body of work takes a closer look at surface emotions in order to find what ‘gifts’ are hidden beneath.

By borrowing images from western art

(I chose 'The Scream' by Edvard Munch as a starting point) and from Japanese art (Oni masks), I focused on facial features which express certain emotions. Then for newer pieces, I 'zoomed in' on the area of the mouth as a way of gently studying these emotions until they dissipate, or until the features become so abstract, the emotions ceases to be recognizable.
